HERR A.

Sebastian. The person behind Herr A.

I am Sebastian Arnold, born in Weimar in 1979. German and Cuban roots, at home in Thuringia and comfortable in several languages. Father, friend, partner, author, with varied interests and a decidedly independent mind.

More about me

I am curious. I enjoy observing, asking questions and understanding how things fit together. Cars, technology and mechanical watch movements interest me as much as people and their motivations. I look closely, try things out and can lose myself in detail.

I paint, play chess and enjoy exploring abandoned places. I am interested in the traces left behind: How did people live and work here? What can still be seen? Painting is about colours and shapes for me; chess is about possibilities and the consequences of my next decision.

Psychology, philosophy and Stoicism are also among my interests. Much of this comes up in everyday life: in dealing with others, making decisions or when things go differently than planned. I question my reactions and convictions. My experiences have shaped me, and have also made me change my mind.

I am open to new things and trust what has proven its worth. I enjoy learning, trying ideas and keeping what works. That fits my entrepreneurial outlook: I want to recognise opportunities and make something of them. Quality, Lean and Kaizen are therefore part of who I am. Understanding processes, spotting unnecessary effort and improving step by step are things I enjoy.

I know what I want, and what I do not. I am direct and radically honest. I address things even when they are uncomfortable. Friends and acquaintances describe me as straightforward: strict, yet just, fair and kind-hearted.

I can also give way when I believe it is the more humane approach. I know that a clear position and mutual understanding can go together. I forgive, but I do not forget. Experiences stay with me and inform my decisions.

As a friend and partner, I am loyal. Honesty, closeness and reliability mean a lot to me. I want to speak openly and hope for the same openness in return. As a father, the connection with my children matters deeply to me. Here too I keep learning, and sometimes have to work out which path makes sense.

I can be stubborn, proud and impatient. Some things stay on my mind longer than I would like. Mindfulness helps me notice more, gain perspective and respond more consciously. Some days I manage that better than others.

This is the life I write from. My books contain experiences, observations and questions that occupy my own mind. In this personal section I also want to show other sides of myself: my interests, my paintings, my thoughts and whatever there is to discover at the moment.

Not perfect, but real.
