When a role no longer fits.

Which role are you still playing even though you have outgrown it?

Some roles were never our choice. We grew into them: the reliable one who sorts everything out. The strong one who needs no help. The one who always understands. Often these roles had a good reason. They created belonging, avoided arguments or carried us through a difficult time.

Precisely because they were once useful, we hold on to them. People know what to expect from us. We know the routine ourselves. A Yes comes quickly. Our own boundary gets checked later.

What still fits today?

Letting go of a role does not mean devaluing past decisions. You can be grateful for what helped you and still acknowledge that you want to live differently today. The question is not whether you ever adapted. It is whether you still make that choice consciously.

Perhaps change begins with a small sentence. “I can't take that on today.” Or: “I see that differently now.” These sentences do not need to explain the last ten years. They describe what is true today.

You may check whether an old answer still fits your life today.

Changing sometimes unsettles the people around you. That is not proof the change is wrong. Stay clear and respectful. Also notice how you feel when you do not immediately return to the familiar role.
