Make room for what does you good

Sometimes a quiet afternoon, a good conversation or time for something you enjoy is enough. Afterwards you realise: I missed that. I want more of it.

Then the next week begins. Appointments, tasks, messages. What felt good slips to the back again. I'll do it later. When there is more time.

But time rarely increases on its own.

Of course there are obligations. Not everything can be postponed, and some days leave little breathing room. Still, an honest look is worthwhile: Am I lacking the opportunity, or taking my own needs less seriously than everything else?

We keep appointments, help others and try to be reliable. With ourselves, we are often more generous about cancelling.

It need not be anything big. Reading a few pages. Listening to music. Repairing something, painting or sitting outside. Spending time with people we feel comfortable with. Or choosing to be alone.

Not every free moment needs a task. A hobby may bring joy without producing a result. And a quiet day may feel good even when little gets done.

Perhaps you remember a recent moment when you felt content. What contributed to it? The company? The quiet? Doing something with your hands? Or nobody wanting anything from you just then?

That is where you can start. Choose one thing to repeat this week, in a way that fits your day and gives you something to look forward to.
